Rocky Mountain Regional Letter (2004)

October 5, 2004

Dear Psi Chi Members, Officers and Advisors:

By now, all of you should be off to a great start in the semester and getting ready to prepare for mid term exams. I hope your Psi Chi calendar is set with some wonderful events that your members will benefit from in many ways.

I want to start this letter recognizing a few amazing chapters in our region that won awards last year. CONGRATULATIONS goes out to the Metropolitan State College of Denver Psi Chi chapter, as the chapter received a Regional Chapter Award. Model Chapter Awards went to the Mesa State College and Utah State University chapters. These chapters made an outstanding effort to be active, vital members of Psi Chi. Remember that all chapters can be a Model Chapter. This award is a yearly award, so make sure all your officers know the criteria needed to win this national honor. Check out the other chapter awards that are available on the website (psichi.org/awards). It would be an honor to present one of the chapters in the Rocky Mountain Region a national award for its outstanding contributions.

Plans for the 2005 Regional Psi Chi Program at the RMPA Conference are being made! I am very excited about the program this year, and am honored to report that Dr. Patricia Arredondo (Arizona State University) is the Psi Chi Distinguished Lecturer. Her talk is entitled, "The Future of Psychology in a Society of Change: How Multicultural Competencies and Guidelines Will Promote Optimal Mental Health." Dr. Arredondo will be our guest in the Psi Chi Hospitality Suite to chat with Psi Chi members in an informal, conversational dialogue.

Get ready for some fabulous symposiums that will help you with your graduate school plans or life after school. The specific times and locations of the RMPA schedule will be available to you later, but the following information may assist in your planning efforts:

When: April 14-16, 2005
Where: Phoenix at the Four Points Barcelo Hotel
Hotel Reservations: (602) 331-9810
Make Reservations By: March 4, 2005 (mention RMPA to get convention rate)

The 2005 RMPA Call for Papers for both the Psi Chi and other RMPA paper sessions may be found on the RMPA website at www.rockymountainpsych.org. All submissions will be online only, and are due from students by January 15, 2005--faculty submissions are due earlier (December 4, 2004). Don't forget that Psi Chi offers eight research awards for $300 each for the top submissions into the Psi Chi program! All submissions are masked and peer reviewed by three individuals. Also, remember that the first author on the submission must be a Psi Chi member to be eligible for award consideration. These awards are in recognition of outstanding scholarly work and look fabulous on a vita.

Finally, I would like to say it has been a privilege to represent the Rocky Mountain Region of Psi Chi as a Vice-President for the past three years. This year is my final year, and I hope you all consider nominating your advisor to run for this position. I cannot express the amount of fun I have had working with the wonderful chapters in our region. I look forward to serving you during my final stay as your Regional Vice-President, and I hope your chapter has a successful year. See you in Phoenix!

Best wishes,

Carla J. Reyes, Ph.D.
Psi Chi Rocky Mountain Regional Vice-President
