Midwestern Regional Fall Letter (2005)
September 2005
Dear Psi Chi Officers, Members, and Faculty Advisors:
Welcome back to the new school year. This fall letter—my last as your region's vice-president—contains important information about submitting Psi Chi proposals to the 2006 Midwestern Psychological Association (MPA) meeting. Please share this information with students and faculty advisors.
Psi Chi Submissions to the 2006 MPA Meeting The enclosed Call for Papers contains information about student submissions to the Psi Chi program at MPA. The deadline for Psi Chi submissions is October 28, 2005. The Psi Chi student deadline is different than the deadline for regular MPA submissions. Send all submissions electronically to midwestpsichi@hope.edu. Please do not send inquiries to this address-only submissions. If you have questions about your proposal or the program, please email vanderstoep@hope.edu. Specific submission instructions are found in the Call for Papers and at www.psichi.org/regions/midwest.asp. Submissions from Psi Chi student members will automatically be considered for a Psi Chi Regional Research Award. Poster sessions will likely take place on Thursday, May 4. Regional Research Award winners will present their papers on May 4 and 5. We encourage you to submit your research, even if it is not completely done by the due date. The Psi Chi program will include Regional Research Award Presentations, Student Poster Sessions, and sessions on applying to and surviving graduate school, maintaining Psi Chi chapter vitality, and jobs for psychology majors. If you have specific ideas about the program, please email me your suggestions.
Psi Chi Chapter Faculty Advisors Faculty advisors attending MPA are invited to attend the Psi Chi advisor appreciation lunch, tentatively scheduled for Friday, May 5. Please plan on coming to the lunch. I will send an invitation in the spring.
Food Drive and Other Psi Chi News
- Psi Chi National President Robert Youth has encouraged all chapters to consider a food drive for a national service project. Each chapter has received information regarding the importance of this effort. Please consider engaging in a food drive on your campus and donating the food locally. Please record your efforts (e.g., how many pounds of food collected) and email your information on to Dr. Youth at youthr@dowling.edu.
- At its business meeting at APA in August, the Psi Chi National Council approved internship grants with the FBI National Center for Analysis of Violent Crime and the APA Science Directorate. Information on these grants and more can be found at www.psichi.org/awards/.
- Please consider submitting your undergraduate research to the Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research. All manuscripts are reviewed critically but constructively. Submission information can be found at www.psichi.org/pubs/journal/submissions.asp.
- My term will expire as Psi Chi Midwest Region Vice-President in the summer of 2006. Your chapter will receive a nomination form this fall for our region's next vice-president. Faculty members who have served as Psi Chi chapter advisors are eligible to be nominated. These names will be forwarded to the Nomination/Election Committee.
- A note to psychology faculty and graduate students: The National Council encourages your participation in the APA's Exploring Behavior Week, an outreach to middle and high school students to expose them to the science of psychology. APA has prepared a resource book, and information on the program is found here: www.apa.org/science/ebw.html
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your region's Psi Chi Vice-President. I hope to see you in May at MPA for another great Psi Chi program.
Sincerely,
Scott VanderStoep, Ph.D. Psi Chi Midwestern Regional Vice-President (2002-06) Hope College
